Some movies are made independently because they're too unique for a mainstream studio to understand; others are made independently because they're too badly written and ineptly directed for anyone with any sense to support. Easier Said is one of the latter. Jack, a frustrated writer (Rule #1: Never watch movies about frustrated writers), quits his job in the publishing world because it's too crass and commercial. After catching his girlfriend with another man, Jack decides it's time to head out west to his uncle's lodge and write his great American novel. At the lodge, he meets a variety of quirky country characters who reject him at first as an outsider, but warm to his sincere effort to fit in. He also reunites with the girl he left behind when he went to the big city, a ski champion who has abandoned her Olympic dreams. Easier Said is simply terrible. The plot is a shapeless series of uncompelling episodes, none of which have any point, though they're supposed to teach Jack important lessons about life. The actors are clumsy, but it's hard to blame them when the direction lacks any sense of pacing or visual style. --Bret Fetzer
